60 YEARS AGO

January 2, 1948 — Mild holiday weather came to an abrupt end when temperatures dipped to 21 below on New Year’s Eve. Colder weather was ushered in by strong north winds and blowing snow. Horses were used in the Greenfield area to transport people from farmsteads over blocked gravel roads to their cars parked on plowed paved roads.

A new North Dakota law required school boards to notify teachers by April 15 if the school district did not plan to renew the teacher’s contract for the following school term.  Keep reading →

Bernice Eleanor Wahl, 89, East Grand Forks, Minn., formerly of Climax, Moorhead, Hitterdal and Lake Park, Minn., died Sunday, January 6, 2008 at Edgewood Vista Assisted Living.
Funeral services were Thursday, January 10, 2008 at Climax Lutheran Church.

Merlin Volla, 82, Clifford, N.D., died Monday, January 7, 2008 at Union Hospital, Mayville, N.D.
Funeral services will be Saturday, January 12, 2008 at Norman Lutheran Church, Clifford. Burial will be in Clifford Cemetery.

Ruth Huso, 91, Layton, Utah, formerly of Fargo and Hillsboro, N.D., died Monday, December 31, 2007 in Layton.
Funeral services were Monday, January 7, 2008 at Mavis Whiting Chapel, Bethany Homes, Fargo. Burial was in Page Cemetery, Page, N.D.

Marjorie H. Rotvold, 85, Watertown, S.D. died Monday, January 7, 2008 at the Jenkins Living Center in Watertown.
Funeral services were Thursday, January 10, 2008 at the South Lake Church of Christ, Watertown. Burial will be January 17 in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Mesa, Ariz.
Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Unit at Jenkins Living Center or Prairie Lakes Healthcare System Hospice, both of Watertown, S.D.

Ingolf Rotvold, 88, Mesa, Ariz., died Monday, December 31, 2008.
Memorial services were Saturday, January 5, 2008 at Cielo Grande Mobile Home Park in Mesa. Burial will be in the spring at Skatvold Cemetery, Climax, Minn.

Kathryn (Berdahl Talmo) Floyd, 100, Hillsboro, N.D., died Thursday, January 3, 2008 at the Hillsboro Medical Center Nursing Home.
Funeral services were Monday, January 7, 2008 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Hillsboro. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Hillsboro.

Stanley Kirkeby, 91, Hillsboro, N.D., died Sunday, December 30, 2007 at the Hillsboro Medical Center Nursing Home.
Funeral services were Friday, January 4, 2008 at Wildeman Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Burial will be in Mabel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Sutton, N.D.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Mabel Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund.

After an eight-year struggle with Alzheimers disease, Bonnie Lou Weatherford, 73, Alexandria, Minn., formerly of Fargo, N.D. passed through transition December 30, 2007 at the Golden Living Center of Battle Lake, Minn.
Funeral services were Friday January 4, 2008 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Hillsboro. Burial was in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Hillsboro.
